The Kimberley Process
The Kimberley Process is a global system that oversees the trade of rough diamonds. Its primary goal is to prevent the revenue generated from diamond trading from financing unethical practices, such as exploitative working conditions, armed conflicts, and anti-government activities. To achieve this, the Kimberley Process restricts the import and export of diamonds among its member countries.
Under this system, any diamond shipment crossing international borders must be securely packaged in tamper-resistant containers and accompanied by a government-validated Kimberley Process Certificate. These certificates are meticulously designed to resist forgery, and each carries a unique serial number that matches the shipment it accompanies. This rigorous process ensures that diamonds tainted by conflict, often called "blood diamonds," do not enter the mainstream diamond market, safeguarding consumers from unknowingly purchasing unethical diamonds.
